Golf
Tip of the Month:
Think About Your Shoulders to Correct a Weak Grip
|
OA
weak grip - where the palm of your leading hand (the left
for right-handed golfers) is too far underneath the
club's handle - is the most common cause of a slice. But
as hard as you try, you can't turn your hands to the
correct position.
You are not alone. Weak grips are rampant among mid- and
high-handicap golfers. So why is this simple-sounding
problem so difficult to fix? Most likely, you're looking
in the wrong place.
When trying to correct your grip, the solution is in your
shoulders. Before you grab the club, your shoulders
should be preset in the position they will be in both at
address and impact. Only then can your hands consistently
return the clubface square to the target at impact.
If the shoulders are relaxed and sloping forward, your
arms hang more in front of your body, as they should at
address. The back of your hands point slightly toward the
sky, creating a stronger position (rotated away from the
target), and letting you square the clubface at impact.
If the shoulder blades are pinched together as you take
your grip, the left hand will go under the club in a weak
position. During the swing, this weak grip rotates the
clubface open and forces an over-the-top clubhead path in
an attempt to square the clubface.
With the shoulders forward and the arms hanging
comfortably, sole the club on the ground. Place your left
hand so its heel pad is on top of the club, your thumb
slightly right of the center. The back of your left hand
should be aimed between the target and the sky.
Position your right hand so your palm faces the target6.
Your left thumb should fit comfortable between your right
thumb-pad and heel-pad. Now you have a grip that
eliminates left-to-right sidespin and the over-the-top
downswing path that is causing your slice.
