Sex and Drugs Don't Mix

by DrWhitaker.com

Most adults know that alcohol is a double-edged sword when it comes to sex. Yes, it can enhance sexual desire or loosen sexual inhibition. But it has a decidedly negative effect on sexual performance.

Less well-known among the general population, however, are the effects of prescription drugs on sexual desire and performance. Physicians know about these side effects, yet they routinely prescribe drugs that can dampen libido or impair sexual performance without mentioning these effects to their patients. They may do so out of a fear that patients won't take medications if they knew about their sexual side effects in advance. Or they may conceal this information out of an arrogant belief that they know what's best for their patients.

To a physician, a patient's high blood pressure or depression may very well be a more serious concern than his or her sexual enjoyment — but to the patient, the loss of this fundamental aspect of being human can be devastating.

Drugs Can Have Multiple Negative Effects on Sex
There are a number of ways that drugs can interfere with a healthy sex life. They may cause drowsiness, lethargy, depression, or confusion. They may interfere with neurotransmitters that are involved in sexual desire and performance. They may prevent or delay ejaculation, promote vaginal dryness, or impair the ability to achieve orgasm.

If you're suffering from any form of sexual dysfunction, it's important to rule out prescription medications that may be causing your problem. If a drug is the culprit, you may be able to switch to a less problematic medication or use dietary measures, lifestyle changes, and targeted nutritional supplements to reduce your reliance on prescription drugs.

The list below includes the most common prescription drugs that can cause sexual side effects. If you are taking one of these drugs (or any other prescription drug) and are experiencing sexual problems, talk to your doctor. Together, you can work to find an alternative therapy that will safely address your medical problem while allowing you to enjoy a healthy sex life. Do not stop taking any prescription drugs without your doctor's supervision.
